Free Instructions: Sliding Knot Friendship Bracelet

 
 

Sliding knots are so satisfying to create! And all you need is some bootlace and a pair of scissors! (...and beads if you wish...) There is something so lovely about wearing jewellery with no metal clasps. Follow our free illustrated instructions to make a sliding knot friendship bracelet as a handmade gift for someone special. We adorned our bracelets with decorative beads, and charms. They are perfect to stack up! This jewellery making project is suitable for beginners.

TIP: If you're new to sliding knots, you may wish to have a practise on your spare bootlace.

 

Materials needed 

1 meter of 2mm Black thong (BTK01)
Beads of your choice, holes must be 5mm- we used pony beads, and metal beads (MT1EU)
Charm carrier (optional) (BH2SP)
5mm jump ring (JR5SP)
Metal Charms of your choice

Tools Needed

A sharp pair of scissors (SCI)
Beading mat (BMT2)
Chain nosed pliers - if adding charms (BEECN)
 

Instructions:

1. Cut 80cm of bootlace, thread the beads of your choice on to your bootlace. For this design we popped a charm carrier on in the middle. Thread the other end of your bootlace back through the beads, in the opposite direction to create a circle. Adjust your bootlace so the length of the ends are even (photo 1)

2.  Adjust the size of the circle to how big you want your bracelet to be when it’s extended. I.e the size you want it to be when going over the wrist. Your sliding knots are going to be positioned either side of your beads. We want one to be at the 2 o’clock position, and one at the 10 o’clock position (photo 2)


3. We worked on the knot on the right hand side first (I am right handed) Take the bootlace in your non dominant hand and where you want your first knot to be. Position the working thread above the lazy thread (photo 3)

 

4.  Loop the working thread forwards/over, and up/behind the lazy thread, hold in this position. Leave a loop, do not pull tight. This is your first loop (photo 4)


5. Repeat the previous step, but this time you will be looping over the lazy thread, and the working thread - position the new loop so it sits next to the loop from the previous step and next to your thumb, do not pull tight.  This is your second loop (photo 5)


6. Repeat the previous step, looping over the lazy thread, and the working thread again - position the new loop so it sits next to the loop from the previous step, next to your thumb, do not pull tight. This is your third loop (photo 6)
TIP: keep your loops as similar in size as possible. This will help when you pull your knot tight


7. Pass the bootlace back through the three loops you have just created (photo 7)


8. Gently pull the knot tighter, being careful to keep the loops of the knot in the same position, and snugly next to each other. Here you can gently re-position the knot if it’s moved while you’ve been working (photo 8)


9. Flip your bracelet over, and repeat steps 3-8 to complete your second knot. Trim your lazy threads, and slide your knots until your bracelet is the size you wish (photo 9)

10. Using chain nosed pliers, open up 1 jump ring, use this to attach a charm of your choice onto the loop of the charm carrier (photo 10)


We think these bracelet would also make great kids party bag gifts (made with the help of an adult!)
